Paying to repair a slow laptop is worth it when the machine has enough life left and the cause is fixable. It is not worth it when the laptop is fundamentally too old or the repair cost is chasing a lost cause.
The trick is getting the verdict before you buy parts, wipe Windows or replace the laptop unnecessarily.
Good signs the laptop is worth servicing
Run through the safe checks before you spend money, reset devices or start changing settings you may need later.
- It is less than about eight years old.
- It has an Intel i3/i5/i7, Ryzen, Apple Silicon or otherwise capable processor.
- The main issue is slow startup, clutter, updates or an old hard drive.
- The screen, keyboard and body are in reasonable condition.
- The battery or charger is not the only thing making it unusable.
What the symptoms usually mean
Under about six years old, slow but otherwise working
Usually points to
Almost always worth repairing. An SSD and a memory upgrade typically transform machines of this age for a fraction of replacement cost.
Best next step
Get the specification checked before replacing. Many machines written off as too old are two straightforward upgrades from being genuinely quick.
Over eight years old and slow
Usually points to
The calculation shifts. Older machines may not support current operating system versions, and parts availability starts to limit sensible repair.
Best next step
Ask specifically whether it can still receive security updates. That matters more than speed for a machine that stays online.
Slow and showing disk errors or freezing
Usually points to
This is not a performance question. Freezing combined with errors suggests a failing drive, and every hour of use risks the data on it.
Best next step
Treat the files as the priority. Back up first, decide about repair afterwards.

A service should be diagnostic, not cosmetic
A proper slow-laptop service checks drive health, memory, temperatures, startup load, malware, updates and whether the machine has a sensible upgrade path.
Deleting a few files and running a cleaner is not the same thing.
SSD upgrades can be excellent value
If the laptop still uses a spinning hard drive, an SSD can be the single biggest improvement. It can make startup, apps and updates feel dramatically faster.
But the rest of the laptop needs to justify the spend. A very weak processor or unsupported operating system changes the answer.
Know when to walk away
If repair plus parts gets close to replacement cost, I will say so. Sometimes the best value is a new or refurbished laptop with your files transferred properly.
Do not pay for a service without a verdict
You should know whether the machine is worth saving before spending on upgrades or reinstall work.
Quick questions
How much does slow laptop servicing start from?
Laptop servicing typically starts from GBP75, with any parts quoted separately before ordering.
Can you advise before I buy a new laptop?
Yes. I can tell you whether the current laptop is worth saving or whether replacement is smarter.
Will servicing remove my files?
Normal servicing should not remove your documents or photos. If reinstall work is needed, backup comes first.
