A cracked or failed laptop screen is one of the faults where repair value depends heavily on the laptop model. Some screens are straightforward. Others are expensive, glued, high-resolution or not worth fitting to an older machine.
Before you book screen repair, it is worth checking the whole laptop still deserves the spend.
Check before pricing a screen
Run through the safe checks before you spend money, reset devices or start changing settings you may need later.
- Find the exact laptop model number.
- Check whether the laptop works on an external monitor.
- Look for hinge damage, bent casing or liquid damage.
- Think about the laptop age and general speed.
- Do not keep closing the lid if the hinge or casing is damaged.
What the symptoms usually mean
Cracked glass but the display still shows a picture
Usually points to
Usually a straightforward panel replacement, and normally economic on a machine that is otherwise healthy.
Best next step
Get the model checked for panel cost. Prices vary enormously between models, so a quote on the exact machine is the only reliable guide.
Black screen but the laptop is clearly running
Usually points to
This may not be the screen. A backlight failure, a loose display cable or a graphics fault can all present identically.
Best next step
Connect an external monitor. A clear picture there means the panel or cable, not the computer, and changes the cost considerably.
Flickering, lines, or patches of discolouration
Usually points to
Usually a failing panel or a display cable working loose at the hinge, which is common on machines opened and closed many times a day.
Best next step
Note whether moving the lid changes it. If it does, that points at the cable rather than the panel, which is often cheaper to resolve.

The screen may not be the only damage
A cracked panel is obvious. Hinge damage, cable damage and casing damage are easier to miss. If the hinge is pulling away, fitting a new screen may not solve the whole problem.
External monitor testing helps
If the laptop works normally on an external monitor, that supports a screen or cable diagnosis. If it does not, the issue may involve graphics, motherboard, storage or startup as well.
Repair value depends on age and part cost
A good laptop with a reasonably priced panel may be worth repairing. A cheap older laptop with a costly screen and weak performance may be better replaced, with files transferred properly.
Do not force damaged hinges
Forcing a lid with broken hinges can damage the screen cable, casing or motherboard mounts.
Quick questions
Can you quote screen repair from a photo?
A photo and exact model help a lot. Final pricing depends on the correct panel and whether hinges or casing are damaged.
Is screen repair always worth it?
No. It depends on laptop age, condition, panel price and whether the machine is otherwise healthy.
Can files be saved if the screen is broken?
Usually, yes. A broken screen does not automatically mean the storage is damaged.
